Hi, my name is Saima Shakil. I was born in a beautiful American city named Chicago. When I was four years old I moved from Chicago to Toronto with my family. I love both cities and each of them holds very special memories for me. Although, Chicago is the city that I was born in, Toronto is the place I like to call home, as its where I spent most of my life. One thing I love about Toronto is how diverse it is. There are people from all over the world that live in Toronto. Growing up in Toronto has given be the chance to learn about so many different cultures.

I graduated from both Nipissing University and Wilfrid Laurier University. From Wilfrid Laurier University, I graduated with my honors in Bachelors of Arts degree. For this degree I had a double major in both, contemporary studies and English. From Nipissing University, I graduated my Bachelors of Education degree. My program was a 5-year program, which included 5 practicums where I could practice my teaching strategies in different classrooms. I was lucky enough to be one of the 30 students from my program that got to do 1 practicum in another country. I spent 1 month in Italy teaching English to children in grade 4,5 and 7. The best part about my trip was that I got to travel to Italy with my friends.

In my spare time I love watching movies, gardening and cooking. What I love the most is travelling. So far I have been to 8 countries. Its my dream to travel the world one day. Since its not possible for me to be on a plane every week, I travel within my city and explore different parts of it every weekend. I go out and explore new restaurants or explore different parks. I dont like to stay at home on weekends, I try my best to go out and spend time with friends and family. In Toronto, every Friday I go to the Mosque to pray with my family. Toronto has many beautiful mosques. My family and I try and go to a different one each week.

I love spending time with my family and friends. My family is very big! I have 3 brothers and 1 sister. My sister has 1 son and he is my eldest nephew. He is 17 years old now, but I still call him my little baby. My youngest nephew, who is my eldest brothers son, is only 5 years old. I have a very close relationship with my family. They are a very important part of my life. One of the hardest parts about being in China is to be so far away from my family. I miss them very much. I am lucky to have such a supporting family.

If theres anything you should know about me is that I love animals! In our family we have 2 dogs named Tyson and Apollo and 2 cats named Mozzie and Fluf

My teaching philosophy is that all students are individual and they all learn in their own unique ways. Every student deserves an encouraging educational environment where they can feel safe and are able to grow physically, mentally, emotionally and socially. As a teacher, its important to create this safe and friendly environment in my classrooms to encourage student participation and student success. I believe one of my key responsibilities as teachers is to be the biggest supporters of all my students. Its important for me to remember that all our students can succeed, I must believe in them so they can remember to believe in themselves. As a teacher I am always learning. I want to make a positive difference in students lives. If I am able to do this, I will be content.  The only thing I wish for is for my students to succeed.

I came to China because the Chinese culture and history has always amazed me. When I heard about the opportunity to work for Maple Leaf and teach in China I was excited, not only because I was going to have a chance to live in a country that has so much beauty to offer but also because I was told that the students in China are some of the best students Ill ever teach. The students at Maple leaf are by far the most respectful and pleasant students I have had the chance to teach so far.
